How to choose a product, and order

Which type of product is right for me?

Original Power Paws™ have been available for more than 16 years and work perfectly for more than 90% of dogs. They are $10.00 per set, in up to 11 colors and 8 sizes in the regular shape. Choose Original for mostly indoor use.

Power Paws Advanced™ was our second line, created for dogs with long nails that need a more durable toe. Advanced has extra stitching at the toe to keep nails from poking through. It is fully stocked in our six most popular colors, and the Greyhound Edition shape is available in black.

Power Paws Reinforced Foot™ is our third generation. It is built on the reinforced toe idea, but the extra stitching runs through the entire foot area, so the sock is more durable overall. It was made for abrasive surfaces like asphalt and sand, and for rugged outdoor activity such as camping, field work and jogging. Both foot shapes are available in black.

What is the difference in foot shapes? Which does my dog need?

The easiest way to tell what you need is to look at the pad group on the bottom of the paw. The foot shape is:

  • Regular if the pad group is about as long as it is wide. Most breeds are here.
  • Greyhound Edition if the pad group is far longer than it is wide. Greyhounds, Poodles, Whippets, and the back paws on some working and herding breeds.

Important: look at both the front and back pads. Some breeds need two sizes or two shapes to get a good fit all around.

How do I choose the size that is right for my dog?

Just as not all people in a family have the same size or shape feet, not all dogs of the same breed or weight have the same paws. Identify the foot shape first, then use the weight guide to determine the size. Both weight guides are on the product pages.

The right size will never look like the right size. Socks bought from us can be exchanged if needed, for a $5 exchange fee that goes towards postage. We want you to have what works, and yes, you can exchange socks you have already tried on. Call 669-235-5029 for more information.

Besides weight, is there another way to determine size and shape?

Yes, use the footprint guide. The regular shape guide is for pad groups that are about as long as they are wide. The Greyhound shape guide is for long, narrow pad groups. Measure just the longest and the widest part of the pad group, not including hair or nails, and see where that falls on the diagrams. Or call us for help at 669-235-5029.

How many Power Paws socks are in a package?

Four socks come in a package. Depending on your pet's need, you can use one, two, three or all four at once. If you need four, you have them. If you do not, you have spares.

Can I use Power Paws outside?

All generations of Power Paws can go outdoors. The real question is how long they will last. Original will work outside, but for durability and longer use, choose Reinforced Foot.

  1. Snow, damp ground and grass. Spray the socks with a waterproofing spray such as Scotchgard. Once dry, they protect against frostbite, snow build-up, ice cuts and salt. Reapply as needed after washing.
  2. Extreme heat, sand and hot pavement. Power Paws protect a dog's feet from burns. They are tested to 250°F and work right out of the package.
  3. Allergies. Power Paws become a barrier that keeps dust, grass and pollen from touching the pads. The allergens stay on the sock and never reach the skin, so there is no itching and nothing has to heal.

Fit, size, and how dogs adapt

If my dog needs two sizes or two shapes, do I need to buy two packages?

Yes. To get the best fit you may need to buy two packages. In doing so you will have spares: some to wear and some to wash, or some for inside and some for outside.

Our Power Paws fit great on two paws, but not the other two. What does that mean?

Some breeds have a different size or shape paw at the front and the back, and some have skinny ankles and legs behind. For any of these reasons you may need two sizes or two shapes of Power Paws. Call 669-235-5029 and our team will walk you through it quickly. We will help you work out whether customizing the fit, or a second size or shape, is what you need.

The socks I received look too small.

Looks can be deceiving. Power Paws should look too small for your dog. Try one on to see how much they stretch. Trying the socks on will not affect your ability to exchange or return them, and this video shows how to check the fit.

  • Too small if you cannot stretch it enough to get it onto the foot. Call 669-235-5029 to exchange for a larger size.
  • Close if the sock rotates or takes a while to come off. Customise the fit by washing it warm next time you do laundry, as described in the next question. Trying a sock on, or washing it, will not affect your ability to change sizes later.
  • Too big if it falls off quickly. Call to exchange for a smaller size.

If you had two or three fingers inside the sock to stretch it while putting it on, your dog gets that space back the moment you slide your fingers out.

Our Power Paws twist or fall off. What can we do?

Twisting generally happens because the elastic in the leg is not stretched enough to hold. First, double check the fit:

  • Is the shape right? Is the pad group square and even, or is it long and narrow, more like a person's foot?
  • Is the size right? Does the grip shape on the sock match the pad shape of the paw, and is the foot part stretched enough to hold?

If those are both right, customize the fit for your dog's paw:

  1. Machine wash in warm and air dry. If you need a little more,
  2. machine wash and machine dry on warm. Still need more?
  3. Use a self-sticking wrap, sold in the first aid section of drug stores, sporting goods stores and large grocery stores. It comes in 1, 2 and 4 inch widths, so cut a strip to suit the dog: about half an inch for a Chihuahua, one inch for a Lab, two inches for a Mastiff. Put the strip on the leg directly above the first bend, go around two to four times in the same circle without pulling tight, and secure it back to itself. Put the sock on top of the wrap. This thickens the leg, gives the elastic a reason to stretch and hold, and the rubber in the wrap gives the elastic a good surface to grip.

If the foot itself is wrong, in shape or in size, call 669-235-5029 to exchange.

Do Power Paws stay on?

Absolutely, if they are the right size and shape. The cotton was chosen for comfort, and the elastic gives a snug, custom fit that stays on.

Will my dog keep them on? My dog hates shoes!

Generally, yes. And if your dog needs them, all we can say is good luck getting them off. Power Paws are light and comfortable, they fit like skin, and they let dogs walk normally. We do not use Velcro or straps because dogs hate those. Thirteen sizes across two distinct foot shapes means a snug fit for any size or shape of paw. Even dogs that hate having their paws touched generally do not try to take them off, because there is nothing in the sock that bothers them.

If your dog hates shoes, these are the opposite of shoes. Our biggest sock does not weigh an ounce, the elastic keeps them comfortable, and there are more sizes and a second foot shape. Power Paws are the opposite of shoes in every way, and dogs love them.

Is it normal for a dog to shake a paw or stand still when Power Paws first go on?

Occasionally, yes, and it is temporary. Our testimonials and customer videos show that most dogs adapt in seconds. For others it may take a minute. The magic is in getting your dog moving: take a walk, call him to come, throw a favourite toy, or give him a treat. A few steps and the show is over. Dogs learn very quickly that Power Paws are good, and if your dog needs them for traction or mobility, do not be surprised when your dog wants them on.

Caring for Power Paws

How do I wash and care for Power Paws?

When your Power Paws get dirty or wet, just throw them in the washing machine. They can be washed like clothes. If the fit is right, we recommend permanent press or gentle cycle with cold water, and drying on low to avoid shrinkage.

For a little shrink to help with twisting, machine wash in warm water and then air dry. If you need a little more, wash warm and dry warm. This stepped approach takes a little longer, but it is designed to give you the best fit.
